La estatua de la Libertad es un monumento que se encuentra en New York, Estados Unidos. Fue inaugurada el 28 de octubre de 1886 en presencia del presidente estadounidense de la época, Grover Cleveland. La estatua es obra del escultor francés Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi y la estructura interna fue diseñada por el ingeniero Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. Su color original no es verde, y acá te explicamos qué sucedió.
La estructura interna de la estatua es de acero pero la recubre un baño de bronce. El bronce contiene cobre, el cual al estar expuesto a factores externos, se oxida a un color verdoso que lleva por nombre de pátina de cardenillo producto de dicho cambio químico. La reacción que se lleva a cabo se puede ilustrar mediante la siguiente ecuación química:
El color verdoso es debido al carbonato de cobre (II), el cual puede variar de azul claro a verde dependiendo de las cantidades presentes de este, en varios grados de hidratación.
Para el año 1906 los rastros de cobre habían desaparecido por completo y la estatua era del color que conocemos a día de hoy. Por tal razón, a principios del siglo XX el Congreso quiso recuperar su color original, pero los estadounidenses protestaron por no poder imaginar la estatua de cualquier otro color.
