Ahora, un equipo ha utilizado un tipo de inteligencia artificial para confirmar la existencia de un nuevo estado de la materia extraño, uno en el que los átomos de potasio exhiben propiedades de un sólido y de un líquido al mismo tiempo. Si de alguna manera pudiera extraer una porción de dicho material, probablemente se vería como un bloque sólido que pierde potasio fundido y que finalmente se disuelve.
«Sería como sostener una esponja llena de agua que comienza a gotear, excepto que la esponja también esté hecha de agua», dice el coautor del estudio Andreas Hermann, un físico de materia condensada en la Universidad de Edimburgo, cuyo equipo describe el trabajo esta semana en las Actas de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias.
El estado inusual del potasio podría existir en las condiciones que se encuentran en el manto de la Tierra, pero el elemento generalmente no se encuentra en forma pura y generalmente está relacionado con otro material. Los modelos de computadora confirmaron que entre aproximadamente 20.000 y 40.000 veces la presión atmosférica y de 127 a 527 grados Centígrados (260 a 980 grados Fahrenheit), el potasio entró en lo que se llama un estado de cadena fundida, en el cual las cadenas se disolvieron en líquido mientras que los cristales de potasio restantes permanecieron sólidos.
Esta es la primera vez que los científicos han demostrado que este estado es termodinámicamente estable para cualquier elemento.
La técnica de aprendizaje automático que desarrolló el equipo podría ser útil para modelar el comportamiento de otras sustancias, dice Marius Millot, quien estudia el material en condiciones extremas en el Laboratorio Nacional Lawrence Livermore.
