Los bastones de caramelo son una tradición navideña; este consiste en un dulce duro realizado con azúcar y menta. No se sabe su origen, solo hay teorías sobre como surgió esta deliciosa tradición.
Una de tantas teorías, señala que el caramelo tiene forma de bastón gracias a un maestro de coro de la Catedral de Colonia. Se dice que para el año 1670, el maestro utilizó esa forma en los caramelos para representar el báculo de un pastor. La tradición dice que él regalaba los caramelos a los niños que asistían a las misas.
Los bastones de caramelo se preparan hirviendo una mezcla de agua, sacarosa (azúcar común) y almidón de maíz (fécula de maíz, maicena) para obtener un jarabe, al que se le agrega el saborizante de menta.
El mentol es un compuesto sólido y cristalino clasificado como un alcohol secundario saturado, el cual se puede hallar en los aceites de ciertos géneros de menta, especialmente en la Mentha arvensis y en la Mentha piperita. También se puede obtener de forma sintética. El mentol es la sustancia química de la menta que hace que nuestra boca se sienta fría y desencadene receptores sensibles al frío.
La sacarosa es una sustancia sólida y cristalina compuesta por una molécula de fructosa y otra molécula de glucosa, por la tanto se considera un disacárido. Químicamente, su fórmula molecular es C12H22O11 y lleva por nombre α-D-Glucopiranosil-(1→2)-β-D-Fructofuranósido.
