Es un compuesto del tipo orgánico, específicamente un aldehído que se presenta en forma líquida y es incoloro a temperatura ambiente, sin embargo cuando se almacena puede tomar un color amarillo.
Su fórmula química es C6H5CHO y forma parte de los aldehídos aromáticos, siendo este el más simple de todos a nivel estructural.
El Benzaldehído lo podemos encontrar en la naturaleza, concretamente en las semillas, tallos y hojas de las plantas de melocotones, cerezas, manzanas y almendras. Igualmente, se encuentra en los aceites de almendras amargas.
Como señalé anteriormente, el benzaldehído es un compuesto aromático, es decir se compone de un anillo bencénico enlazado a un grupo funcional aldehído (CHO), lo que hace que su estructura sea de tipo polar.
En cuanto a su hibridación, se puede señalar que al estar conformado por un anillo bencénico, los átomos de carbono y el grupo formilo presentan una hibridación sp2.
