Es un líquido incoloro, viscoso a temperatura ambiente, no obstante cuando se emplea en forma impura, como agente de guerra, por lo general es de color amarillo y tiene un olor similar a las plantas de mostaza, por tal motivo se dio se nombre.
El gas mostaza es insoluble en agua, pero muy soluble en grasa, lo que contribuye a su rápida absorción por la piel. Lo que lo convierte en un agente particularmente perjudicial para la salud celular, ya que puede llevar a la muerte celular y en algunos casos al cáncer.
La mostaza sulfurada tiene un efecto irritante en sus víctimas con la capacidad de formar grandes ampollas en la piel expuesta. También es altamente mutagénico y cancerígeno.
Wilhelm Steinkopf fue el creador del gas mostaza en conjunto con Fritz Haber, en la I guerra mundial.
