Beautiful Chemistry (o BeautifulChemistry.net) empezó como una colaboración entre la Universidad de Ciencia y Tecnología de China (USTC) y la editorial de la Universidad de Tsinghua (TUP). El objetivo del proyecto era llevar la belleza de la química al público en general.
El grupo de científicos detrás de este proyecto se inspiró en el biólogo alemán Ernst Haeckel, quien hace 100 años publicó su trabajo Art Forms in Nature, bastante popular en su tiempo. El impresionante y exquisito trabajo artístico de Ernst Haeckel, llevó la vida marina y microscópica a los ojos del público.
“Esperamos seguir los pasos dados por Haeckel, usando los medios digitales y la tecnología para llevar la belleza y maravillas de la química a la gran audiencia; además, hacer que la química sea cercana y amigable para llegar a más niños y sumar estudiantes interesados en química”, dicen los autores en su página.
