En esta nueva entrega de Laboratorio en casa realizaremos un experimento llamado la maceta mágica. Este tipo de experiencias sirven para hacerlas como una especie de truco de magia ya sea para realizar alguna tarea de clases o en alguna celebración donde queramos enseñar y a la vez divertir a los niños.
Materiales
1 maceta pequeña o mediana
1 pañal desechable
Papel cartulina (debe ser del mismo color de la maceta)
Agua
Procedimiento
- Abre la parte interna del pañal
- Coloca todo el contenido en la maceta
- Utilizando la cartulina, realiza una tapa que recubra muy bien todo el contenido del pañal
- Los pasos anteriores se deben realizar con antelación para que se pueda llevar a cabo el “truco de magia”
- Agrega agua moderadamente a la maceta. Espera unos segundos y gírelo de manera que quede boca abajo, sin que el público vea el interior de la maceta.
- La idea es que al voltear la maceta no caiga el agua que fue agregada a la misma.
Resultado
Observarás como el agua que fue añadida se desaparece.
Pero, ¿por qué ocurre esto?
El agua “desaparece” debido a que en el interior de la maceta se halla una pequeña porción de pañal desechable. El pañal desechable contiene una sustancia que ayuda a absorber los líquidos que tocan el material. El compuesto responsable de ello es el poliacrilato de sodio, el cual es un polímero que debido a su estructura absorbe moléculas como el agua hasta formar un gel muy denso.
Los polímeros son macromoléculas formadas por la unión repetitiva de moléculas más pequeñas llamadas monómeras.
La capacidad de absorber grandes cantidades de agua es debido a que en su estructura molecular se hallan grupos carboxilatos de sodio que “cuelgan” de la estructura principal del compuesto. Estos grupos, al entrar en contacto con el agua desprenden el sodio, dejando libres iones negativos de carboxilo. Los iones negativos se repelen, extendiendo la cadena principal y provocando el aumento de volumen.
