El mentol es un compuesto orgánico, específicamente un alcohol de tipo secundario, el cual se puede extraer de los aceites de ciertas variedades de menta, siendo habitualmente encontrada en la Menta piperita y en la Mentha arvensis. De igual manera, este compuesto se puede obtener a través de una síntesis química en el laboratorio.
Este compuesto se presenta en forma sólida, cerosa, cristalina y de color blanco, siendo insoluble en éter, agua y alcohol. El mentol es sólido a temperatura ambiente, no obstante, funde fácilmente a una temperatura por encima de la ambiente.
Químicamente hablando, el mentol presenta siete isómeros, específicamente estereoisómeros, los cuales son: neomentol, neoisomentol e isomentol, además de los correspondientes compuestos enantiómeros de estos.
Este se halla en la naturaleza, principalmente como (-)-mentol, cuya configuración es (1R, 2S, 5R). Asimismo, dentro de esos isómeros, los enantiómeros (+) y (-) son los más estables desde el punto de vista conformacional.
Las propiedades del mentol, lo hace un compuesto apropiado para utilizarse en una gran cantidad de productos de uso común, como en la preparación de aceites de menta, caramelos y chicles, pastas dentales, ungüentos para el dolor, enjuagues bucales, cremas, medicamentos, entre muchos más usos.
