El poliacrilato de sodio es un polvo blanco, sin olor que puede aumentar su volumen hasta mil veces si se le añade agua destilada.
Este polímero es utilizado ampliamente en la industria por su capacidad de absorción. Dentro de las aplicaciones podemos nombrar: pañales desechables, toallas sanitarias femeninas, nieve artificial, secuestradores de iones y diversos procesos químicos donde se necesite que se absorba agua.
La capacidad de absorción de este derivado del ácido poliacrílico, es es debido a que en su estructura molecular se hallan grupos de carboxilatos de sodio que están unidos a la cadena principal del poliacrilato. Entonces dichos grupos, cuando están en contacto con el agua, desligan al catión sodio, permitiendo que los iones negativos de carboxilato estén libres. Los iones negativos se rechazan, extendiendo la cadena principal y ocasionando el incremento de volumen de la molécula.
El poliacrilato de sodio fue inventado por Robert Niles Bashaw, Bobby Leroy Atkins y Billy Gene Harper en el Basic Research Laboratory de la Dow Chemical Company
